Consultancy

I describe my approach to consultancy as ‘client-centred’. It’s no accident that in 1994 I received the Government’s then-highest commendation - see Client Quotes - for business planning for a plan I personally would not have put into place if I was in the client’s position. I would have expanded the business; the client wanted to consolidate, protect their investment against changes in the market and have an easier life. We wrote a plan together for the client’s objectives. I got the award and the client came back to me for help with reviewing and updating the plan over the next 10 years. Such was the degree of trust and rapport that the client eventually consulted with me about how and when to sell the business. (That actually wasn’t one of my areas of expertise; but I did  know someone who could help!)

My view is that, if the client doesn’t own both the process and the outcomes, the consultancy process is worthless, Therefore, it’s important to establish trust, integrity and rapport as quickly as possible. Then the job is to facilitate the realisation of the client’s vision - not the consultant’s - provided, of course, that the vision is realistic in the circumstances.
