Psychology Topics #3: Crime, Depression

This ‘night school’ type programme takes 2 key topic areas much investigated by psychologists and sociologists and distils key concepts into accessible ‘bites’ for the layperson. Some previous understanding of Psychology and Sociology is helpful but not essential.

The Crime sessions draw from biological, sociological and psychological factors influencing crime and deviance, as well as Spiral Dynamics and Dimensions of Temperament. Understanding of crime and deviance will be explored and strategies considered for tackling undesirable behaviours.

The Depression sessions consider possible causes of Depression, gender difference in it incidence, options for treatment and how to be around someone who is depressed.

Psychology for Grandparents
Getting older and being retired - or even semi-retired! - can provide time and opportunity to learn and explore so many things not possible before. However, it can also be a time of real frustration as the world that once was theirs gets taken in different directions, their children don’t always reflect their own values and their beloved grandchildren can sometimes seem like aliens from outer space - their attitudes and behaviour are so different!

This short workshop is for older people who wish to understand a little more about how and why the world, society and their own offspring are changing in the ways they are. Note: science is considered but at a fairly-accessible level.

Commitment: 1 short day, 9:15-14:15 with 30 minutes lunch break and 2 short coffee breaks. Start sharp; finish approximate.

Psychology - an Introduction: Understanding Yourself and Others
This ‘night school’ type programme incorporates key elements of
Integrated SocioPsychology within the frame of a general introduction to the field of Psychology. Academic enough to provide a basis for further (serious) study, the level of study is still light enough for the more casual learner to make practical use of the knowledge and skills taught without feeling intimidated by too much ‘technical stuff’. The aim is to learn while having fun!

Integrated SocioPsychology
Courses

Schedule - Dates & Details

All my training programmes are based on Integrated SocioPsychology as a cohesive approach to gaining greater understanding of what makes human beings 'tick'. Some courses focus on the theory and models while others focus more on practical applications - eg: communication and conflict.

To book programmes I am staging myself, click the red/underlined Book! to be taken to an online booking form. My own ‘open’ programmes sometimes apply a discount to the 4th, 5th, etc, places booked by one person or organisation. Also be aware that I sometimes provide very handsome discounts for members of professional organisations with which I am associated - eg: British Psychological Society (BPS), Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD), etc. So it is worth considering the discount options when booking a course. Discounts are mutually exclusive unless otherwise indicated.

To book programmes staged in partnership with other training providers - indicated with a blue Booking Now! - please use the contact details given in the Events Diary.

For organisations, please note that all courses can be customised for in-house delivery, with what ever 'bolt-ons' are appropriate. For enquiries and queries, please get in touch via the details on the
Contact page.

Training providers interested in hosting one or more of these programmes, both in the UK and abroad, are invited to contact me to discuss potential partnering arrangements.

Communication Skills - the Integrated SocioPsychology Approach
The aim of the first session of this 2-day programme is to enable people to understand how communication takes place, why and how it goes wrong, and what people need to do to improve it. The second day focuses on the less obvious sub-texts in communication and the motivational factors which drive the real messages being given and received.

Suitable for people in all walks of life wanting to improve their communication skills and to minimise misunderstandings.

Diploma in Integrated SocioPsychology

This programme not only explores the models and concepts of Integrated SocioPsychology in depth and how they link together but also the science underpinning the theories. Participants will get to know the work of Clare W Graves, Don Beck & Chris Cowan, Don Beck & Ken Wilber, Robert Dilts, Hans J Eysenck, L Michael Hall, Susan Blackmore, Muzafer Sherif, Jean Piaget, Frederick Bartlett and Aaron Beck/Lyn Abramson, Martin Seligman & John Teasdale in some depth as well as referencing a host of other psychological and sociological researchers and theorists.

This course is for serious students of the behavioural sciences and participants should expect the work to be of at least A-Level standard. Whilst there is still much of the interactivity and practical focus of other Integrated SocioPsychology courses, this programme is intrinsically academic in nature. In addition to the 14-days training, an amount of pre-course and in-course reading will be necessary. There will be 1 assessed practical exercise and 2 assessed pieces of written work - 1 short piece of ‘homeplay’ during the course and a post-course essay. Participants will be required to demonstrate a minimum level of understanding and competence to achieve the Diploma.

Conflict Management - the Integrated SocioPsychology Approach

Matching the conflict management attributions of Spiral Dynamics co-developer Don Beck with the conflict modes identified by Robert Blake & Jane Mouton and Ken Thomas & Ralph Kilmann provides powerful insights into the roots and nature of different types of conflict and the kinds of management strategies most appropriate. The programme also considers the role of structural tensions inherent in most organisations as well as the impact of temperament on individuals.

Suitable for all involved in managing and supervising others.

Integrated SocioPsychology for NLP Practitioners
Neuro-Linguistic Programming provides some incredibly powerful therapeutic tools and incorporates models which provide real insight, such as Neurological Levels and Meta-States. However, the range of models taught on most Practitioner and Master Practitioner courses takes the understanding of the human psyche only so far.
This course is for 'NLPers' who wish to develop their knowledge of human nature much further, so that they can use their
NLP tools with much greater power and precision.

Knowing Me, Knowing You: Integrated SocioPsychology for Sustainable Relationships
The one that is fairly low on science but pretty high on application, this course is aimed at those who simply want to get a little more out of life and out of their relationships - partner, children, parents, friends, etc. Participants will gain a much greater understanding of why they and their relationships are like they are - and what they can do to improve things.
Couples wanting to improve their relationship and/or gain more understanding of parent-child issues will find these workshops particularly useful. Indeed some find it helpful to bring the in-laws/grandparents along!

Working with Organisation LifeCycles
What makes this programme different is the use of
Ichak Adizes’s highly-advanced organisational development maps (which are also informed by the work of Larry E Greiner), cross-related to sociopsychological tools such as 4Q/8L and the MeshWORKS concept. This provides a unique breadth and depth of understanding of the nature of organisational growth, peak and decline. With this level of insight, leaders can determine what is needed for their organisation to achieve or regain optimal effectiveness. These workshops include case studies and scenario planning.
Aimed at organisation decision-makers and business advisers.
