“It should be required reading in local and national government departments!”

- Pamela Crofts, Hull, UK

Now available as a PDF download!!!

My first book, 'Knowing Me, Knowing You: an Integrated Socio- Psychology Guide to Personal Fulfilment & Better Relationships', was made available as a handsome paperback via Trafford Publishing in March 2006. Now, it is also available as a less costly PDF download

The book looks first at how the mind works, as a means to enhancing personal well-being. Then it considers ways of using this knowledge to manage conflict and build positive relationships with your partner, children, work colleagues, etc

Whether your interest is in personal development, workplace issues, education, community politics or family arenas, 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' can help you manage yourself and your relationships that much better.

“Keith Rice has integrated a number of models and research into a meta- framework that can be used by individuals as a self help tool or by professionals in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, management and social work. This just may be the best psychology book published in a long time.
If you want to better understand people and organizations, read this book!"

-
Bill Hajdu, Berkeley, California., USA

"At last! A book that captures a lot of the information that I have read and learned - a wealth of reading and ideas coming together... Excellent quality material."
-
Dave Lowe, Hull, UK

So, what on earth is a 'SocioPsychologist'?
Deeply versed in all forms and schools of Psychology, increasingly a sociologist by way of a long-running interest in political science and increasingly an understanding of the critical impact Biology has upon behaviour, both individually and collectively.,,,

I coined the term 'Integrated SocioPsychology' in 2004 for a comprehensive and cohesive approach I intuited could align and integrate all the different (and all too-often bickering!) disciplines in the behavioural sciences. So a 'sociopsychologist' is essentially me(!)...or someone who shares something of my approach to understanding the 'human condition'.

That said, I readily acknowledge a range of 'gurus', both living and dead, whose work taken singularly is far more important than anything I have conceived, I delight in a wide spectrum of alliances with like-minded thinkers and I search constantly for those who can expand and/or enhance my own understanding. I am thrilled that this site contains contributions from several 'guests' who could also be described as 'SocioPsychologists'.

If, after studying what’s on this site, you feel you have something valuable to contribute to ideas on how Integrated SocioPsychology will/should develop, please do contact me to discuss this...!

In the 'olden days' they would have called people like me 'wizards' - people who made things change. People who caused
people to change. Since just about everything that happens in a society - other than the weather and other 'acts of God' - is the result of actions (or inaction!) by people, change (for better or for worse) is to do with people.

It's been said that I can change people. I can't, really...honest! However, I can assess someone's readiness for change and, if that change is right for them, assist them to make the change. Also I can help people resolve issues by getting to the core factors and by looking at things from different perspectives.

And since organisations are only structures containing people and their cultures, I can help assess and facilitate change and resolve issues at an organisational level too.

How did I come to be this 'SocioPsychologist'...?
I have been studying the behavioural sciences and their applications to 'real life' since my first year at university many (many!) years ago. However, the key turning point was being trained in Spiral Dynamics to Level II by the model's developers,
Dr Don Beck & Christopher Cowan. This, combined with my training as a Master Practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), my studies in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and teaching Psychology and Sociology to A-level (and studying way beyond!), provides me with arguably the most advanced mapping of the human condition currently available.

To make cohesive sense of all the models and interventions in the behavioural sciences and the complimentary 'hard sciences' (Biology, Neuroscience), I am using Spiral Dynamics - and the Graves Model on which it is based - to underpin Robert Dilts’ Neurological Levels structure and develop the approach I think of as Integrated SocioPsychology. The Dimensions of Temperament construct of Dr Hans Eysenck serves well to describe individual temperamental dispositions while the framework of 4Q/8L enables multi-context 'big picture' views.

This web site carries a real flavour and much information as to how Integrated SocioPsychology is being developed (by myself and others). However, greater detail and elaboration can be found in my book, ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You: an Integrated SocioPsychology Guide to Personal Fulfilment & Better Relationships’.

With this mapping, it is possible to understand what motivates people to think and behave in different ways at different times and to identify what the triggers for change may be. Thus, it is possible to create strategies for change.

Additionally, NLP provides a number of powerful 'therapy tools' with which it is possible to assist people through deep cognitive and emotional blockages to change. CBT is highly useful in embedding new and more positive ways of thinking; additionally Behavioural measures are often critical to deal with issues arising from temperament.

At an organisational level, I favour the Organisation LifeCycle approach (developed by Ichak Adizes - though I also refer much to the work of Larry Greiner), in conjunction with Spiral Dynamics and some of the NLP models, to facilitate the key stakeholders in understanding where their organisation is at and what the problems really are. It is then possible to decide what interventions and business development tools are appropriate.

Using the Adizes model can be a vital element in structuring a 'MeshWORK' - Don Beck's concept for the macro application of Spiral Dynamics - as it provides powerful descriptors for 4Q/8L's Lower Right Quadrant. Clearly, though, a MeshWORK can be far bigger than an organisation - applying to a region, a country or potentially even a continent!

More on the cutting-edge theories and concepts with which I work can be found in the Models, Articles, interactive FAQs, Glossary and MeshWORKS pages. The A-Level pages contain a range of invaluable resources for those studying for academic qualifications in the behavioural sciences. However, many of the A-Level pages are also linked in to those detailing the theories and concepts of Integrated SocioPsychology for background and supporting information.

The interactive Discussion Forum is to enable people interested in the behavioural sciences, from, say,  fellow devotees of Spiral Dynamics to academic students baffled by the continuing interest in Sigmund Freud’s Oedipus Complex, to air their views, raise queries and debate. Visitors are also invited to use the Guestmap to indicate where they are from, what their particular interests are and what they think of this site. (Hopefully, positive things!)

What have I done/what do I offer/who do I work with?
A qualified teacher, with over 25 years experience in business and industry, I went into management consultancy & training at the end of the 1980s. In addition to winning the Department of Trade & Industry's highest commendation for Business Planning in the early-mid-1990s, I assisted 24 organisations to achieve Investors in People recognition and another 4 to achieve ISO 9000. However, my interests have moved increasingly onto 'SocioPsychologist’ issues in recent years. After all, even successful Quality Management depends on people's attitudes!

At the beginning of 2001, encouraged by some teachers I had introduced to Spiral Dynamics and NLP, I returned part-time to teaching to learn for myself what the key issues were in modern-day Education. This has enabled me to map what in Spiral Dynamics and Neurological Levels terms is going on in classrooms and to work on some solutions. A Spiral analysis of many of the behaviour problems besetting Britain's classrooms is offered in the world-renowned schematic, 'A Downward Spiral...'.

When the chance came to teach (on a part-time basis) first Psychology and then Sociology to A-level,  it was a wonderful opportunity not only to expand and deepen my own knowledge and understanding but to help cultivate a new generation of psychologists, sociologists - and possibly even 'SocioPsychologists'! I found I enjoy teaching A-Level so much that I have added private tuition to my portfolio of services. See the Tutor page for more information on my approach and the kind of support I offer to students.

I work on business development issues with organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Such activities range from in-house facilitation of organisational leaders in strategic visioning and planning, to training of managers and supervisors in leadership and management skills, to small group and one-to-one coaching.

See the
Business pages for a flavour of the services I provide and my approach to organisational growth issues. (Two case studies can be accessed from those pages.)

The Education pages list the courses and workshops I have designed for the benefit of teachers and other education professionals and their students. (Another case study can be accessed via those pages.)

The Community pages look at the approach(es) I espouse on a more societal basis while the Global pages consider the application of these principles to international affairs. My Blog often contains shortish pieces relevant to these kinds of issues. The Blog is very important to me as it allows quick, intuitive responses to whatever strikes me - in contrast to the various Articles, Features and FAQs which are, for the most part, studiously researched. The Blog is interactive and visitors are invited to make constructive comments in response to my posts.

Although I usually work under my own name, I do subcontract where appropriate and have worked for the likes of Hidden Resources Change Management Ltd, Cobus Business Services Ltd, Summit Consulting and David Burnby & Associates in the past.

For an overview of my career, visit the Career pages.

I also carry out one-to-one therapy work. This may occur as part of a management coaching session - or it may be arranged as a private consultation with the 'client'. I also provide counselling on relationship problems for couples and individuals. See the Therapy pages.

Periodically I run Integrated SocioPsychology workshop programmes introducing people to Spiral Dynamics, related NLP models such as Meta States and other key sociopsychological concepts such as Reciprocal Determinism. Visit ISP Courses to learn more about these workshops.

The Events Diary lists such workshops and other ‘open’ events (various training programmes, speaking engagements, etc) which are accesible to  organisations and/or individuals in general.

So...
