Notes:

#1: Unlike Graves, Kohlberg and Harvey Hunt & Schroeder, Abraham Maslow did little scientific research and statistical analysis. Rather he based his psychological observations primarily on case studies. In particular he studied historical figures he considered to be prime examples of Self-Actualisation - such as Abraham Lincoln.
Such was the impact of his initial 5-level Hierarchy of Needs - and the debate it
provoked - that the levels Maslow added as his understanding developed were/are often
overlooked. There is some speculation that Cognitive, which clearly fits with aspects of
both BLUE and ORANGE, could also be mapped to be some elements of YELLOW.
Equally characteristics of Aesthetic could be mapped to both YELLOW and TURQUOISE.
It is also worth noting that some of Maslow's writings on Esteem imply goal-oriented
strategic thinking – which would mean an element of ORANGE.

#2: Gerald Heard's Ecological (or, Leptoid) Man incorporates elements of integrated or advanced spiritual thinking which could be argued as being 2nd Tier.

#3: Some of Jane Loevinger's work indicates that Impulsive may grow into Self-Protective then Conformist which grows into Conscientious Conformist. It should also be noted that Symbiotic could be argued as matching the transition stage of beige/PURPLE. Two Loevinger stages not shown here match transition stages: Malignant Conformist equates to red/BLUE and Individualistic to ORANGE/green.

#4: David Hunt split from Harvey and Schroeder when he came across evidence of a level of thinking less complex than Type 1 – which he termed Sub-Type 1 and which he and Graves eventually mapped to C-P (RED).

#5: In his mapping of the moral development of children, Lawrence Kohlberg's Good/Bad and Law & Order stages relate to BLUE - though Good/Bad could be perceived as being marginally of the Entering BLUE transition stage. Punishment & Obedience clearly incorporates elements of PURPLE thinking.
Stage 4B (or, 4.5 or, 4+) was introduced to account for relativistic variations on Law & Order questions, reflecting the influence of emergent ORANGE. In some of Kohlberg's writings, Social Contract appears to incorporate ORANGE elements. At times Principled Conscience appears to reflect some GREEN influence.

#6: Max Weber, one of the great founding fathers of Sociology, was describing observable behaviour as distinct from an underlying cause of behaviour.

#4: William Moulton Marston – working some 10 years before Maslow – had no concept of a hierarchical order to his behavioural types which relate as much to temperamental Dimensions of Personality as they do to the vMEMES of Spiral Dynamics.
